Edition Notes

Folded layout plan of the Great Palace of Istanbul (or Istanbul Mosaic Museum) floor mosaics following the palace's conservation, at end (folds out to 26 x 82 cm.).

The museum houses mosaics from the Byzantine period, unearthed at the site of the Great Palace of Constantinople during extensive excavations behind the Sultanahmet Camii, Istanbul (or the Blue Mosque) in 1935-1938 and 1951-1954; the mosaics were later worked on from 1983-1997. The mosaic subjects, absent of religious motifs, depict primarily scenes of nature, animals, rural life, and mythology.
