Edition Notes

In this version, the orphan brother and sister are saved by an old woman and placed in a school of industry.

Wood engravings signed, "Mason," and "WM." Sinclair Hamilton attributes these wood engravings (with some reservations) to William Mason (fl. 1808-1844), a wood engraver who worked in Hartford (approximately 1808-1810), and Philadelphia (approximately 1810-1844). He became an engraving instructor and Philadelphia engraver George Gilbert was a pupil. See Sinclair Hamilton, Early Amer. book illustrators and wood engravers (1958), pages 176-177. See also G.C. Groce and D. H. Wallace, New-York Historical Society's dictionary of artists in Amer. (1957), page 428.

Hymn, page 54.
