Philip Tolefree, the discreet City detective, is called on by Mr. Entwhistle to travel to France and spy on a woman at a certain hotel. Tolefree is initially reluctant to take on such seedy work until he receives Entwhistle's assurances that this has less to do with the woman than the men who wish to make her acquaintance. Having completed the task, Toelfree arrives at Entwhistle's country house ready to make his report - only to find that the eminent businessman has been found murdered in his study less than an hour earlier...
