Excerpts

In the early spring of 1564, by the time Michelangelo Buonarroti's corpse, in a coffin and wrapped like a bale of merchandise, arrived from Rome, the three hundred or so excited members of the Accademia del Disegno (Academy of Design) in Florence were well advanced with their plans for the obsequies of the 'head, master and father of us all'.
