EARLY in the morning of January 2, 1872, I set sail from the dull, sleepy port of Brindisi in an Italian steamer, the 'Principe Tomaso,' for Alexandria, which place we reached on Friday, the 5th, about mid-day, after a most agreeable voyage, though the steamer was much inferior in size to the 'Poonah,' a P. & O. vessel which sailed and arrived much about the same time that we did.
