Edition Notes
This is the first edition. The second edition was probably printed in Mexico City by the widow of Francisco Rodríguez Lupercio in 1690 and, although the title page is identical, the text has been reset.
Medina dates this edition to either 1689 or 1690.
According to "Asignación de imprentas y años de publicación de las ediciones del Viaje de América a Roma, de José de Castro: valoración para su edición critica" by Guadalupe Rodríguez Dominguez, published in Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie 133, no. 2 (May 30, 2017), pages 472-491, this first edition was probably printed in Madrid by Juan García Infanzón in 1689.
According to Guadalupe Rodríguez Dominguez, the head piece and initial on leaf [2] recto was used by the Juan García Infanzón at his printing shop in Madrid.
"Aviendose hallado en la corte el autor, en la ocasion de la fatal perdida de su reyna [Marie Louise, of Orléans, Queen, consort of Charles II, King of Spain, 1662-1689], acompaño à los cisnes de Europa con esta expression de su justissimo sentimiento", poem on leaf [93] recto-verso, states that the author was still in Spain, at court in Madrid, at the time of printing.
