Edition Notes

Note: Sir Alfred Garrod discovered that gout was caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood and was thus able to distinguish the disease from other forms of arthritis. He classified arthritis into two independent diseases, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and introduced the thread test for uric acid in the blood.
