The Battle of Junín was a military engagement, commanded by Simón Bol̋ivar, Antonio José Sucre, and José de Canterac, in the Peruvian War of Independence, fought in the highlands of the Junín Region on August 6, 1824.
The Republic of Gran Colombia lasted from 1819-1831 and encompassed the present day countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, and parts of northern Peru, western Guyana, and northwest Brazil. Simón Bolívar served as its first president from 1819-1830 from the capital in Bogotá. It dissolved in November of 1831 due to the political differences and tensions among the peoples of the different present day countries, which made up the republic.
This anonymous document describes the celebrations that happened in the city of Piura, Peru, when the news arrived that Simón Bolívar's army had triumphed in the battle of Junín. The three days of celebrations included dancing, religious ceremonies, and speeches.
