Edition Notes
Place of publication of the French language edition of 1756 is suggested by NUC Pre-1956 to have been printed in Dresden.
German-language version of a text best known in French: Histoire de Nicolas I. roy du Paraguai, et empereur des Marmelus. Saint Paul [i.e. Dresden?], 1756. Italian and Dutch versions were also printed. Of the French version is stated: "It appears to have been printed in Germany, and is the fabrication of some needy and ignorant impostor ... He makes Nicolas Roubiouni a Spaniard by birth, a rogue by breeding, and a Jesuit by profession, who raises a rebellion among the Indians of Nova Colonia ... proclaims himself King of Paraguay ... is invited to S. Paulo by the Mamalucos ...and takes the title of emperor." -- Southey, R., Hist. of Brasil. London, 1817-22, v. 3, p. 474. Nicolas Neenguiru, a Guarani chief, became notorious as King Nicolas of Paraguay, with no real basis in fact. Cf. Southey, R. Hist. of Brasil, v. 3, p. 468, 474-475; Dobritzhofer, M. An account of the Abipones, v. 1, p. 27-32. Despite Southey's assertions, it appears to be little more than an adventure novel.
