The authorship of this work is established by an extract from Griffith's unpublished Journal covering his residence in France 1791-1799: "To counteract the excitement in France against the United States in 1797, I wrote an answer to a remark in the correspondence of the ambassador Fauchet, relative to the influence of British trade in America." Cf. E.W. Latimer, My scrap book of the French Revolution. Chicago, 1898, p. 1-69; also attributed to Thomas Waters Griffith by NUC Pre-1956.
