    Transportation-Markings Foundations

    2 items Last modified March 15, 2012

Transportation-Markings Foundations is an integrative study of all forms of safety aids that provide guidance, regulations, warnings, information to modes of transport. It introduces the the field through a review of communication, semiotics, holarchy. It also examines visual, acoustic, electronic processes. Taxonomy, design, cultural constructs are also included. It is part of Transportation-Markings: A Study in Communication Monograph Series.

Undergirding T-M Foundations and other studies of Volume I are two previous monographs: Transportation-Markings: A Study in Communication, and American Transportation-Markings: A Study in Communication. The first named title was published by University Press of America (1981; ISBN: 0-8191-1654-8). It incorporates a revised version of an older Peter de Ridder Press title, and also included the first of the modal studies, International Marine Aids to Navigation. The title of the UPA edition, Transportation-Markings: A Study in Communication, did not include "Monograph Series". The several parts were not identified on cover or title page. Part A had two sections; an arrangement that has been dropped. The marine study was divided into Floating Aids (Part C), and Fixed Aids (Part D); both parts are now closely aligned. The Preface referred to "Volume I" but that was not extended to cover or title page. A 2nd Impression of the UPA study was produced and listed under Mount Angel Abbey. The cover includes Monograph Series, Volume I, First Edition, 2nd Impression and the several parts of the study. 2nd Impression: 1985, ISBN: O-918941-06-7. The second named title was accepted by Thomas Sebeok, editor of Studies in Semiotics (Indiana University). Those titles were to be published by Peter de Ridder Press (The Netherlands). However, the Press went out of business before finishing the Series; American T-M was not published. The manuscript is a partial basis for Foundations, and First Study in T-M US. ISBN: 90-316-0132-2 (1977).
