The town of Athens is an unfortunate place for all vampire— humans who psychically absorb the emotive energy of those around them. In a curiously antiquated world in the far future, in which vampire suffer marginalization, Thomas Walker becomes fascinated with the vampiric literary journal called Leecherary, and its elusive author. As he plunges into a universe of illicit publications and nighttime lurking, his connection to his newfound companion deepens, and they find themselves in the midst of an escalating fight for justice and dignity for the vampir community.

This queer, #ownvoices story about the death of silence and the birth of a movement is the first book in the series titled Leeches.

Excerpts

There are three things which are to be taken as true, if anything is considered to be true at all. First, that there is nothing which separates me as an individualfrom the collective 'us'. I am not remarkable. I am not exceptional. I am an ordinary artifact in the museum which I inhabit, and in which my equals line the shelves. Second: that my world is less a museum, and more an aquarium. We are sharks. We are all sharks, swimming in circles within our tanks, watching you stand on the outside, our teeth aching for blood.

Third, that the glass is cracking.

This doesn't capture the overarching literary style of the book, but does a great job at capturing the spirit of it (which, I assume, is why it was chosen to don the first page).

If I closed my eyes, the memories were so vivid that I could sometimes pretend I was still standing in that parking lot in the rain. I could feel the raindrops tapping against my body, the fabric of my button-up soaked and clinging to my skin. I could hear the roaring of the wind, the shaking of the tree branches, the groaning of the injured author sitting at my feet. I found myself feeling guilty, for the way I stood there, frozen in shock— or had it been awe? What right had I to tower over him like that, and not even offer my hand? If I had, would he have taken it? And if he had, what would have been of me then?

This paragraph was the first I've read in a while which truly put me in the place of the narrator. Reading it, I could feel that soaked button-up on my skin and hear the wind in those trees. This is the kind of story telling which makes me add books to OpenLibrary at work...
