Edition Notes

Attributed to John Smith by Pollard.

Names of printers supplied by Pollard.

"To the courteous reader", p. [5-7], signed: I.H.

There are four issues of this work printed for John Tappe in London in the same year, differing only in the statement of responsibility on the title page: the first has statement reading "Written by a gentleman of the said collony, to a worshipfull friend in his in England"; the second has statement reading "Written by T. Watson, one of the said collony, to a worshipful friend in his in England"; the third has statement reading "Written by Captaine Smith coronell of the said collony, to a worshipfull friend of his in England"; and the fourth has statement reading "Written by Captaine Smith one of the saif collony, to a worshipfull friend of his in England"

According to Sabin, athough this was John Smith's first published work, his name did not appear on the title page in the earlier issues because the authorship was unknown to the editor, into whose hands the manuscript came by chance "at the second or third hand". It appears from the editor's three page address "To the courteous reader," that certain portions of the manuscript were omitted, "being as I thought (fit to be priuate) I would not aduenture to make it publicke"
