Dugald Stewart (1753-1828) fut l'élève de Thomas Reid (1710-1796), le fondateur de la psychologie écossaise du sens commun. Ce texte constitue son oeuvre ultime, dont le premier volume développe ses idées sur nos principes instinctifs (appétits, désirs, affections), puis sur nos principes rationnels d'action, en s'attardant sur la faculté morale. Cette psychologie eut un immense succès en France au cours de la 1ère moitié du XIXe siècle. Elle constitua un moyen de combattre le sensualisme condillacien.
