Edition Notes
Place of publication and date from Clément, Grässe, and BM.
Includes commentary by Melchior Goldast from the 1608 Frankfurt ed. of his Imperiala decreta De cultu imaginum.
This is a late 17th century reprint of the 1549 Paris ed. of the Opus inlustrissimi and the 1596 Frankfurt. ed. of the Synodus Parisiensis De imaginibus, issued, according to D. Clément, with a new pref. and commentary by Jean Daillé.
" ... La prétendue Édition des Livres Carolins"--Clément, D. Bib. curieuse, t. 6, p. 298.
The original 1549 Paris ed. of the Opus inlustrissimi was 16mo. It concerns the Second Council of Nicaea. Authorship attributed to Theodulfus, Bishop of Orléans. Edited pseudonymously by Jean Du Tillet, Bishop of Meaux. Cf. New Cath. encyc.
The original 1596 Frankfurt. ed. of the Synodus Parisiensis included a publisher statement: "apud hered. Andreae Wecheli Claudium Marnium & Joannem Aubrium"--Adams 334.
Daillé's Swiss publishers were J.A. & S. De Tournes of Geneva, descendents of the Lyons family of Huguenot printers exiled in Geneva 1585-1728, who may have transmitted the Lyonnais counterfeiting tradition. Cf. Dict. biog. française; Cartier, A. Bib. des éds. des de Tournes.
Grässe, v. 2, p. 51
NUC, v. 104, p. 52; v. 331, p. 631
