Edition Notes

"Originally published as a supplement to issues v-vi of Twice a year (a book of literature, the arts and civil liberties). Originally intended to be included in the issue itself, it grew to the proportions of a separate volume."

With the exception of the extract from Max Brod's Biography of Franz Kafka (tr. by G. Humphreys-Roberts) the translations are by Sophie Prombaum.

"The ... excerpts from ... The castle are taken from the final sixty-six pages of the second German edition. These pages, comprising an additional two-and-a-half chapters, had not been included in the first edition, which was translated by Edwin and Willa Muir."
