The critical commentary volume to accompany the music volume published in v. 40 of the series Complete critical edition/ Bela Bartok. The present edition of Mikrokosmos, containing 153 pieces and 33 exercises and originally published in 6 volumes by Boosey & Hawkes in 1940, consists of 2 volumes: the first volume (i.e. v. 40) presents the main text (the introductory chapters by the editor, Bartok's Preface, and the complete series of pieces followed by the exercises and the original Notes to the first edition), while the second volume (i.e. v. 41) offers the Critical commentary (description of sources, the compositional process and critical notes, including pieces omitted from the first edition)
