Visual artist Gyz La Rivière (Rotterdam, 1976) saw the light of day in the same year as VHS. It is therefore not surprising that he collects photos from video stores in Rotterdam. It just got a little out of hand. 'Home Video' is a two-part book in which photos from video stores in the Rijnmond area form the core. La Rivière brings together images from more than 125 video stores and takes you through four decades of city history on the basis of an essay, various texts, photos, video library passes, advertisements and other (private) archive material. In addition to this extensive video library collection, the book contains an enormous image essay. This rich part shows, among other things, the emergence of the video studio in the Lijnbaancentrum, film and video workshop De Lantaren, video center RKS and KUUB3. Since the advent of video, moving images have become an increasingly important part of our lives. From Zoom meetings and TikTok to street cameras, from the VAR in football to medical applications. In the pioneering days, artists used the video camera to break free from the museum space and, for example, to show real life. Video is a democratic medium and everyone should be able to get on TV, right? This powerfully illustrated book is an ode to the bygone VHS era and a tribute to the video store as a neighborhood social institution. Het is alleen een beetje uit de hand gelopen. 'Home Video' is een tweeledig boek waarin foto's van videotheken uit het Rijnmondgebied de spil vormen. La Rivière brengt beeldmateriaal van meer dan 125 videotheken samen en neemt je aan de hand van een essay, diverse teksten, foto's, videotheekpasjes, reclame-uitingen en ander (privé)archiefmateriaal mee door vier decennia stadsgeschiedenis. Het boek bevat naast deze uitgebreide videothekenverzameling een enorm beeldessay. Dit rijke deel laat onder meer de opkomst zien van de videostudio in het Lijnbaancentrum, film- en videowerkplaats De Lantaren, videocentrum RKS en KUUB3.
