Arquiteturas contemporâneas no Paraguai

Arquitecturas contemporáneas en Paraguay

The book Contemporary Architectures in Paraguay, launched on November 28 2019 in São Paulo, tries to reveal the richness and inventiveness of contemporary constructions made by a new generation of Paraguayan architects. It is also proposed to make an analysis of the countryœs history and its development, marked by the influence of successive Brazilian governments. The bilingual publication (Portuguese-Spanish) presents a selection of buildings marked by constructive experimentation and a lot of creativity, using basic materials: brick, concrete and glass. Managing very simple material resources, the works of architects such as Solano Benítez and Javier Corvalán have achieved great prominence in global architecture. With critical texts and a selection of twenty-nine works, the book organized by Goma Oficina proposes to that territory a new look, which can help us think about the future (and present) of Latin American cities, taking as an example that generation of professionals who come finding creative solutions to local social and urban challenges. The graphic design of the book Arquitecturas Contemporáneas en Paraguay was carried out by the own bookœs organizers, the collective Goma Oficina, which made a greater integration between the design concept and the critical research presented. The Paraguayan works selected in the book stands out for experimenting with ordinary materials, resulting in extremely contemporary, heterogeneous and purposeful interventions. We made the constructive elements of the book (paper, fold and sewing) apparent, revealing its structure as much as possible, and referring to the tactile sensation that the own Paraguayan architecture provokes. The materials chosen were the most common and available on the market, used without finishing and major refinements. The choice of using a fifth special color, neon orange, appears as the representation of clay an important element of the Guarani constructive repertoire. On the other hand, the graphic paper was diagrammed in its original size, (96 x 66 cm) in order to explore the incidence of folds in the graphic composition of the images and chapter titles. The typographies used (with or without serif) reveal the contrast between new and old, and are supports for the bilingual content.
