This book is a contribution to morphological study of the colonial retablos/altars in churches located in the historic center of Salvador, Brazil. Antonio José Faria Góis focuses on the comprehensive way in which this art was preserved in the collection of Bahian temples - where, in the set of its altarpieces, the continuous evolutionary sequence of the style components is configured. It is, therefore, a record of this singular plastic experience, lived in a well-defined urban environment in which the exaltation of the sacred took place as an extension of the administrative nucleus, at a precise time. In this space, there is the presence of seminal elements of the Portuguese-Brazilian panorama of architecture and carving, in which Faria Góis includes the oldest examples, in the post-Renaissance style, which have not yet been studied - they too - in the scarce bibliography on the theme.
