An edition of Witness Al Mutanabbi (2011)

Witness Al Mutanabbi

This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition's focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content.

Edition Notes

Poem.

" ... produced by Toby Millman's printmaking class at the University of Michigan, School of Art & Design in the fall of 2011. Each student designed and printed a page spread ..."--Colophon.

"Fifteen students in Toby Millman's course, Printmaking for Non Majors at the School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan collaborated on the book, Witness Al-Mutanabbi. Students came from academic units throughout the University including Kinesiology, Mathematics, English or Architecture, however one Art & Design graduate student (John Gutoskey) and a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow (Katie Zezima) also participated in this project. Each student focused on a different theme, such as value of free expression, violence as a method of censorship, or the history of Al Mutanabbi Street itself. As a whole, the book provides insight into to the layers of responses to the tragedy that occurred that day"--From the Centre for Fine Print Research, UK website.
