An edition of Adolph Tidemand, 1814-1876 (2019)

Adolph Tidemand, 1814-1876

at fastholde, hvad endnu bestaar

After Johan Christian Dahl, Adolph Tidemand (1814-1876) is considered the first Norwegian artist with international status. He was celebrated at the world exhibitions in London and Paris, and he sold paintings to buyers from large parts of the world; Europe, Russia and America. This biography sheds light on Adolph Tidemand's life and work and Norway's cultural and political development from the beginning of the 19th century to the first part of the 20th century. The cultural bridge between Norway and Germany is a central theme, where the connection Mandal-Düsseldorf is highlighted as particularly important for development in the field of art and culture, in both cities and both countries. The biography highlights Adolph Tidemand's work with motifs from Norwegian Christian life. Together with Hans Gude, Adolph Tidemand is considered the great, unifying figure during the national romanticism in Norwegian art. And it is often the national romantic Adolph Tidemand we know best. But the biography sheds light on the fact that Adolph Tidemand also commented on social differences in society, and that he was concerned with the living conditions of the individual.
