"To the north the Antillian Sea and The insurgent were published in Esdras Parra's 1968 short story collection Juego Limpio--they are some of the earliest published works of fiction by a trans woman anywhere in the world. Like any trans person, Parra was always herself, even before she transitioned, and in these stories we see her apparently male protagonists experience isolation and fear among friends and family, experience neglect and violence in the home, they delve into memory, search for their true selves, we even see the older protagonist imagining being a woman and showing attraction for men. Her protagonists stand on the margins of society and they see everything--all the trauma, alienation, hypocrisy, the brutal order, and absurdity--she must have known in order to write these stories on the cusp of her thirties, which is strangely enough where I am today"--Page [1].
