General José Quintín Bandera Betancourt was a military leader of the Cuban insurrection against the Spanish during the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). In 1899 he was considered a leader of the black population of Santiago de Cuba Province, and in 1906 he led an army of insurgents toward Havana but was killed near Punta Brava. Earlier he was also involved in the Ten Years' War (1868-1878).
