Printed and photographic sources show how popular at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries were wicker furniture, cane and rattan furniture, how large was the variety of forms and applications. However, only a few of them survived in Polish collections. This material - flexible, but also fragile, which makes it unstable - is the cause of this condition. Although they were the furnishing of palace and court gardens and interiors, as well as urban villas, although their design was also undertaken by renowned artists, the importance of woven furniture is still depreciated. The opinion is that they belong more to ethnography than to applied art, which we hope to change with this book.0The study is the first attempt to synthesize a broad topic covering the production and trade of plaited furniture, as well as their use outdoors and outside. It indicates social, environmental and stylish trends that shaped this production. It is also a tribute to the material that is iconically associated with the Polish landscape.0The book presents the history of plaited furniture and technical details, including their possible upholstery. The author cited interesting iconographic examples, she collected photographs from the second half of the 19th to the 1930s. She collected a comprehensive bibliography based on a query of archives and the press, but also reached for diary literature. She found specific designers, but also European designs (furniture and patterns).
