Edition Notes
Non-Latin script record.
"Publishes in full the Hermitage collection of works dating from 1572 to 1902, which comprise many varied objects such as services, cups, tankards, mirror frames, samovars, coffee sets, toiletry, pitchers, urns, trays, and a throne. Most entries have multiple illustrations showing works from different views, identifying hallmarks, and showing phases of restoration work. The works of silver come mainly from collections built by the imperial family especially Catherine I, Catherine the Great, and Nicholas I, and from private collections nationalized after the revolution. The introduction traces the history of the collection, informs us about major silversmiths, and appraises the overall quality of the Hermitage{u2019}s collection."
"Appendices publish documents important for tracing provenance, such as bills from London describing works sent to St. Petersburg, information on sales of pieces by the Bolshviks in the 1920s and 1930s, and a description with 38 photographs of the restoration of the imperial throne commissioned from London in 1731" -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 382-288) and indexes.
