In zijn streven naar artistieke vernieuwing was de kunstenaar Toon Kelder bereid grote offers te brengen. Dat ging zo ver dat hij regelmatig zijn oude werk, waarmee hij groot commercieel succes had, eigenhandig vernietigde, omdat het niet langer aan zijn smaak voldeed. Zo ontwikkelde hij zich van een expressionistisch schilder, via verschillende artistieke experimenten, tot een voorloper van de formele abstracte beeldhouwkunst in Nederland.
