Edition Notes
Accompanying fascicle 1 (dispensa 1) is a supplementary folio consisting of a t.-p with title: Famiglie celebre di Italia and the author's "Avviso" describing his publication plans.
Illustrations include hand-colored engraved coats of arms at upper right-hand corner of 1st sheet devoted to each family; line engravings of coins, medals, tombs, and other genealogically significant monuments; and aquatint ports. (with engraving) of important family members. The family monuments and tombs illustrated were in many cases already destroyed at the time of publication which in itself constitutes an important art historical record. Occasional sheets are printed in sepia. There are some guard tissues. The ill. were drawn and engraved by a large number of artists over the life of the project. Included are maps (mostly hand-colored) of territory owned or governed by certain families (Sforza, Medici, Verme, Este, Gonzaga, Colonna, Ferrero, Pallavicino). There are a number of aquatint views of castles and other buildings associated with certain families. Fasc. 59 includes a depiction of Marcantonio Colonna's entry into Rome, 1571.
The work as a whole contains 184 fascicles treating 150 families. It appeared from 1819 to 1883. At the time of Litta's death in 1852, only 113 fascicules had been published. After Litta's death it was continued by F. Oderici, L. Passerini, F. Stefani, F. di Mauro di Polvica, and Costantino Coda. Emilio Giusti of Milan, the first publisher, was succeeded by: dottor Giulio Ferrario, Milan, 1821-1862; Luciano Basadonna, Milan & subsequently Turin, 1862-1871; Francesco Basadonna, 1872-83. See Anton Ferrante Boschetti, I cataloghi dell'opera di Pompeo Litta "Famiglie celebri italiane" (Modena : Società tipografica, 1930; reprinted Bologna : A. Forni, 1977), p. [23]-25.
