Bird's-eye view of Amsterdam

on the cusp of the Golden Age

The famous painting 'Bird's-Eye View' (1538) by Cornelis Anthonisz is above all the oldest map of Amsterdam. 'Bird's-Eye View' draws a unique picture of Amsterdam in the first half of the 16th century. A small catholic town on the shores of the river Amstel, standing with one foot in the Middle Ages and the other on the cusp of the Golden Age. A city, soon to be heading the world's leading power.
