Psalms; 147 hymns, some with several parts; 172 addtional hymns; 17 doxologies; catechism, [etc.].
A committee appointed by the General Synod of 1788, published in 1789 a new Psalm book, containing, by request, some well-composed hymns. In 1814 Dr. Livingston expanded the collection of hymns; the Synod adopted his book which became the basis of the denominational hymnody. In 1831 it became Book 1 of the enlarged edition, and the 172 Additional hymns selected by the Dr. Thomas De Witt's committee became Book 2--Cf. Benson.
