Edition Notes

Collection of 50 separately printed Democratic Party campaign pamphlets for the election of 1864, bound up with general title page and table of contents ([4] p., versos blank). The table is divided between "Publications of the Society for the Diffusion of Political Knowledge" (numbered 1-20, 24, 27, 29-39 in contents; generally styled "Papers from ..."), and "Publications of the Central Executive Campaign Committee" (numbered 1-4, 4 1/2, 5-11, 18-19, 21-23 in contents; generally styled "Campaign document ...", or simply "Document")

The titles given in the table of contents are for the most part short paraphrases; the series as represented by division and numbering of the table is not invariably reflected in the item itself (which may include no series title at all). Since the Society for the Diffusion of Political Knowledge and the Central Executive Campaign Committee were both organized by August Belmont, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and both operated from 13 Park Row, New York, the occasional confusion of their publications in the table of contents may indicate a degree of interchangeability, however they were actually designated. There are also occasional conflicts and changes in numbering, especially in items published in the later stages of the campaign
