Edition Notes

This title is prefixed to v. 1 only; v. 2-6 have title: The works of Mr. William Shakespear ... 1770. (the latter title appears also in v. 1 as added t.p.).

Sir Thomas Hanmer's edition of 1744, revised by Thomas Hawkins, with additional notes by Bishop Percy, Mr. Warton, and John Hawkins, and "Various readings of Mr. Theobald and Mr. Capell" at end of each volume.

Contains the Chandos portrait, Stratford bust (as altered for Pope's edition) and the Westminster monument, also an engraving to each play, by H. Gravelot after F. Hayman.
