Tibetan New Year's card, sent as a holiday card by Viola and Theos Bernard, January 1938. Comprises one panel of layers Tibetan handmade paper, with two pieces of silk covering the greeting in Tibetan. The Tibetan text, in gold on black, is flanked by images of Chen-Re-Zi [i.e. Spyan-ras-gzigs], patron saint of Tibet and of Dorje-Jig-Che [i.e. Rdo-rje-'jigs byed], guardian of the faith. New Years greeting in English, again in gold on black, on verso.
Housed in an envelope also of Tibetan handmade paper, with five Tibetan stamps affixed, 2 red and 1 each green, blue or yellow, with three ink stamps.
Accompanied by a description of the manufacture of the card and an envelope for all components. Both of yellow-orange Western machine-made paper, the envelope with the Bernards' address 280 West 4th Street New York City.
