Libretto for an opera in 3 acts, with a prologue and an epilogue ("Written by Mr. Esticourt. Spoken by Mrs. Oldfeild"--P. 5).
Original Italian text by S. Stampiglia; English translation attributed to O. Mac Swinny (see The London Stage, pt. 2) and sometimes "to one Northman and to Motteaux," on the evidence of an agreement, according to which the Italian was first translated into English prose, and Mr. Northman was to put it into English verse (see A. Nicoll, History of early 18th-century drama).
Music by G. Bononcini, adapted for London by N. Haym. See Oxford music online/Grove music online (WWW site, 1 July 2009)
First performed at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, 30 April 1706, and in 1708, on 27 February; original Italian version first performed in Naples at the S. Bartolomeo Teatro, 27 December 1696.
