The prevalent literature on the subject of food security, drawing from the "Entitlement and Deprivation (ED) Thesis" (Sen, 1981 and Dreze and Sen, 1989), defines an individual to be food secure when there is enough food in the system that he/she can buy (food availability), when he/she has the capacity to buy that food (ability to buy food), and when the food that the individual buys provides her/him with the requisite nutritional value (The World Bank, 1986).
