西德的一个车床工人的儿子， 父母死了之后，他那个法律保护人——一个资本家把他送进了没有自由的教养院里去。一个强盗把他骗了出来，要他做助手。他为了要做一个正直而自由的人，不愿做罪犯，决意逃出盗窝；但是这愿望在西德是无法实现的。最后，他历尽了艰难险阻，逃到了民主德国，他才实现了这个愿望。从这孩子短短的经历中，深刻的反映出资本主义制度摧残儿童的罪恶。
