Book Description: Cleveland, Wisconsin: Compass Books, Video, Films, (1994). First Edition., 1994. Signed & Inscribed by the Author (Learn From the Past! Robert E. Whittaker) to title page. Octavo, softbound (slick, full-color illus. wrappers), xx + 252 pp. Fine (As New). From lower cover: This obscure campaign produced six aviation historical firsts and five additional military firsts during the Siege of Tsingtau, China, at the start of World War I in 1914. The Germans, against over 13-t0-1 odds, defended their colony and naval base against Japanese and (token) British land-sea-air forces. Navy Lietenant Gunther Pluschow flew a primitive Rumpler Taube (Dove) monoplane against nine Imperial Japanese army and navy aircraft intent on destroying the German Sky Spy. He survived and escaped under orders to neutral China. He then escaped Chinese internment and later from a British P.O.W. camp and fled to Germany to become a decorated hero. World War I, WWI, Military Aviation History, Aeroplanes, Aviation.
