The Jesuits had been expelled from Brazil in 1754, Portugal in 1759, France in 1764, Spain and its colonies in 1767, and Parma in 1768. This Papal brief known by the title "Dominus ac Redemptor" dated July 21, 1773, officially suppressed the Jesuit order. It was first printed in Rome in the same year.
According to Silva, it was translated by António Pereira de Figueiredo.
