Andrés Reggio was the commander of the naval squadron based in Havana. In October of 1748, he engaged a force of six Brisish ships off the coast of Havana which were under the command of Sir Charles Knowles. In the battle, one of the ships, the Africa, was driven ashore and burned but other Spanish ships escaped, having inflicted much damage on Knowles' ship, the Cornwall. Both Reggio and Knowles were summoned to face court martial. While Knowles was reprimanded, Colina's defense of Reggio allowed him to be cleared of all charges.
