Edition Notes
Signatures: 2⁴, a-y⁸, z¹⁰, A-E⁸, F⁴.
Imprint from colophon.
Leaf 1a: Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, vbi hvmana omnia non nisi somnivm esse docet. Atque obiter plvrimi scitv sane qvam digna commemorat ...
Woodcuts on leaves [10b] and [21a] signed: b.
Name of author given in acrostic formed by the first letters of the chapters (Poliam frater Franciscus Columna peramauit).
Woodcuts have been attributed to Giovanni Bellino due to the ones on [10b] and [21a] being signed "b." Others have attributed them to Raffaelle. Alexander Pope thought them by Francia or Andrea de Mantegna. Lake Price attributed them to Carpaccio. Used by others without acknowledgement.
On leaf [233a] dated ".M.CCCC.LXVII. Katendis Maii." Renouard suggests that the errata with the 1499 date was often torn out so that it might pass for the earlier date of printing.
Usually attributed to Francesco Colonna, Eliseo of Treviso has also been advanced as the author.
The last two letters of the last word in line 5 of the title on [5]a SANEQVAM appears to have been stamped in after an erasure, according to BM V, p. 562.
First edition. It was reprinted by the Aldine press in 1545 using the same woodcuts but without the woodcut initials.
