The first 50 years of the Maryland marine police (now the MD Natural Resources police). The force was established in 1865 to combat oyster pirates who were pilfering the oyster beds in the MD waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The force was also assigned to assure that those doing commercial oystering in the bay were properly licensed and did not take oysters that were undersized, or take them out of season.
