Lord Alvescot travels to his late cousin’s estate as part of his duties as guardian for his cousin’s young children. Once at Cutsdean he finds to his surprise that his cousin’s calm and capable widow is supporting a range of relatives and hangers-on. As he works with her to make economies and gently push the long-term guests to leave, the two start to form a deeper bond.
