An appeal from the North West

sir, at a public meeting held at Battleford, N.W.T., on the 30th day of December 1889, the undersigned were authorized, on behalf of themselves and other settlers, to forward to each representative of the House of Commons a copy of a memorial at said meeting unanimously endorsed, and reading as follows : having been residents of the Battleford district, at the time of the outbreak of the late rebellion of 1885 and having in common with all military bodies taken a part in the suppression, and, when under arms in defence of the country, suffered serious loss by the destruction of our property by the Indians, and having furthered suffered serious pecuniary loss by an inadequate indemnity from the government through the blundering of an incompetent commission, who in adjusting the first awards representing $190,000, refused to accept any evidence by the claimants in support of their respective claims ...
