"The American steamer Caroline which had been supplying rebel forces on Navy Island was seized on 29 December in American waters by Allan MacNab's naval brigade. One crew member was killed in the assault and the Caroline was fired and cut adrift in the Niagara River providing a popular but inaccurate icon of 1837: the burning ship swept over the Falls"--Fleming.
