Edition Notes
Cover title.
Illustrations and cover design by Walter Crane.
Dated 1872, from Cambridge Univ. Lib. accession date, in Spencer, Isobel Walter Crane (London, 1975), p. 202, agreeing with Massé; the nature of the possibly earliest wrapper seems, however, to indicate a likelier date of 1871.
Consists of 4bifolia printed on one side, chromoxylographs with letterpress, saddle stitched in col. pictorial stiff paper wrapper; leaves 1 and 8 pasted down to inside of wrapper.
Wrapper (earliest version?): Printed in red, green, and black ondark yellow; publisher's advertisement on back cover: "Routledge's new sixpenny toy books. Beautifully printed ... Dalziel Brothers.", nos. 37-98 (with gaps) in a single list, i.e. not including this title; without the imprint of Edmund Evans at foot as in all (?) other early Crane toy book wrappers of this period; quotation from The Standard at head dated Dec. 23, 1870.
