Dans les années 2250 environ, la ville d'Ember connaît des soucis d'approvisionnement: construite sous terre, elle ne reçoit que de l'éclairage artificiel provenant d'une centrale électrique qui se délabre. Un jour, quelques temps après son affectation comme "messager", Lina découvre un message énigmatique que sa petite sœur a à moitié mangé. Elle tente de le déchiffrer avec l'aide de Doon, son meilleur ami. Suivant les instructions et malgré les menaces du pouvoir en place, ils vont découvrir comment quitter leur ville, vouée à la disparition, pour rejoindre la surface éclairée par le soleil
