This is a doctoral dissertation from the University of Southern California, 1981. Michel de Ghelderode was a Flemish playwright active between the first and second world wars. One of his unique features was his sense of theatricality, what was visually and aurally dramatic on stage. Ghelderode's eighteen major works, most of which are set in Medieval Flanders, are analyzed concerning the physical appearance of each play's setting, the physical appearance of the characters, the physical acts, and the auditory effects, and how these support the text.
