Edition Notes

Each part has individual t.p.

Signatures: A⁶ B-2B¹² 2C⁶ (frontispiece included in the signatures).

Originally published in Paris, 1617 under title: Ælius Seianus, histoire romaine.

Supposed to have been written to represent the rise and fall of Concino Concini, maréchal d'Ancre, assassinated 1617, and of his wife Leonora Dori Galigaï.

The first English translation [of part one only] published under the initials P.M., with title: The powerfull favorite ... 1628, is said to have been intended as a satire on George Villiers, first duke of Buckingham. That translation has been ascribed, probably erroneously, to Philip Massinger--cf. S. Halkett and J. Laing. Dictionary of anonymous and pseudonymous English literature. New and enl. ed., 1926-34, v. 4, p. 403.

The second part: Unhappy prosperity: or Philippa the Catanian is founded on a story by Boccaccio in the De casibus virorum illustrium.

Various errors in paging.

Title page within ornamental border; text within lined borders; head-pieces; initials.

S.T.C., 17667.

Burns Library copy: inscription on front pastedown endpaper: J.C.W., Jan. 1905; Boston College Library stamp on t.p. on both copies.
