An edition of A Squeak in the Dark (2023)

A Squeek in the Dark

Children's book, for ages 6-12.

You'll like April, she's a little quiet sometimes, a little loud sometimes, but she is always friendly. She lives with her mum in Glasgow, well she did until recently, now April and her mum are moving. It's a small flat, like her last one, but probably the first thing you'd notice is that it is actually a small part of Ythan House, an enormous stately home in the Scottish countryside.

One night, April is awoken by a squeak in the corner of her room, followed by the sound of tiny little footsteps moving closer…

Sometimes being small let's you see things that others can't and as April soon discovers, though Ythan House is very big, it is hiding some tiny secrets. With a little help from a friendly mouse and a very special ring she might just find out how special Ythan House and it's mysterious residents are.

Excerpts

I know you love this song Mum,” said April, selecting the next tune on the car stereo. They were driving north to their new house. Mum had shown April pictures of it but she still couldn’t quite believe they were moving into such an amazing place. It was called Ythan House, an enormous country house with two play parks, a fox slide and even its own lake! Her mum had reminded April that they were only going to have a small flat tucked away in the South Wing, but to her that didn't make it any less exciting.

“Oh, I do love this song,” said Mum. Other people called her Sarah, but April saved this for when she was really cross and needed to be taken seriously, but she was pretty sure she wouldn't feel that way out here. “Takes me back to my wilder days,” continued Mum.

Their little blue and rust-coloured Peugeot sailed through the twisting country roads that seemed to both of them to go on forever. They had passed through the last big town, Aberdeen, a while ago and they both knew it wasn’t too much longer before they would finally see the house.

The sat nav declared, “In 300 metres take the next right then after 2.5 kilometres you will reach your destination."

“No way,” said Mum, “I think that those last 2.5 kilometres are the driveway!”

“Wild!” breathed April, filled with wonder.

They didn’t say another word to each other as they passed by the gatehouse and then along the drive. Woods, fields and the occasional building passing on each side. This was going to take some getting used to.

Finally, from between the trees, they could make out a series of buildings that looked similar to all the pictures they'd seen. A sign to the right pointed out a carpark.

“Not for the likes of us,” Mum proudly proclaimed. “We’ve got a special spot under the clock tower.”

Mum drove on round the buildings. She had studied the map closely before they had left, terrified that she’d drive to the wrong part of the site and get told off...
