"This volume of SBS contains only a small part of the papers presented at the sigillographic colloquium, organized during the 19th Congress of Byzantine Studies in Copenhagen. We had to adopt this solution because the list of seals published between 1931 and 1986 turned out to be rather lengthy. We divided our material into two parts. The present volume is intended to be ready for the sigillographic symposium of Shumen/Preslav (16-18 September 1998). Volume 6 will contain the rest of the contributions presented at Copenhagen and the list of seals published between 1991 and 1996 and will hopefully appear toward the end of 1998 or early in 1999." -- Preface.
